You can never have too many board games! They are the perfect rescue for rainy days, nights in, and family time, all without involving staring at a screen for hours at a time! We all grew up playing board games and the ones that we were drawn towards usually had something to do with our developing personalities. Want to see if you have a super smart thinker on your hands? Why not give chess a try? How about someone who is good at trading, making deals, and investing? Monopoly all the way!
The board games we played as a kid often helped define us in some way and they absolutely deserve a spot in our home. No matter the season, having some board games around the house for your 7-year-old boy is essential. It is truly a wonderful way to spend time together as a family, help develop some reasoning and critical thinking skills, and maybe even get revenge on a naughty kid (it’s just a game, anyways)!
Check out some of our favorite board games that your 7-year-old boy would love to have:
First on the list is a game that has been around for a LONG time. Since its conception, it has ruined friendships and hurt marriages, all through a few bits of cardboard and an image of a hat. Nevertheless, we play on. Monopoly is the perfect game for a 7-year-old who is just learning the basics of counting and money. Will they need some help during the game? Probably. Will you enjoy smashing them as they learn that whoever holds the most land wins? Absolutely.
If you’ve never played Connect Four, it’s about as simple as games get! Using colored pieces, you compete against another player to see who can connect four of their colored pieces first. While simple in concept, this game is known for its elaborate strategies and tense showdowns as you slowly run out of space. Any kid can pick this up and it’s sure to provide hours of fun for kids and adults alike. You can’t help but love this classic! This set includes all the pieces you might need as well as the plastic board to play with.
Have a future sleuth on your hands? If you answer yes, there is really one option for you – Guess Who?! This classic game is really easy to play and can be learned in just a few moments. Using a board full of various people, you slowly chip away at the possible “suspects” and try and guess who the selected person is. As far as mental games go, Guess Who? is great for developing critical thinking skills and reason-based question and answering. It can be played for fun while it helps your kid’s brain get better!
As much as we sometimes hate it, we just can’t stay away from Sorry! Getting bounced back to the starting tiles is one easy way to end a friendship, but when you finally get to do it back? Nothing is sweeter.
This classic game is really easy and doesn’t require much strategy. It is mostly a chance game, meaning your kid will have an equal chance of winning, even against adults! That is often enough to make is a family favorite for weeknight hangouts or family time.
Little boys love stories of heroes and villains, usually leading them to love superheroes and wars throughout history. If you have a boy who can’t get enough of ships, guns, and battle, this might be the game for you! Most of us have played Battleship before, and it’s not hard to understand why! This semi-guessing, semi-strategy game is easy to set up and fun to play. After setting up your ships, compete against another player and see who can locate the other and sink their ships first! It’s a two-player game and teaches some critical thinking skills while encouraging spatial reasoning, all while being a blast.
Kids are insanely flexible. It’s almost like they are made of some weird putty that allows them to bend around and sit comfortably in the most awkward positions without any sign of discomfort! For that reason alone, your kids should love playing (and beating) you in Twister! This simple game has been around for quite some time and only requires the board, a spinner, and a few willing participants. You are given a color dot and either an arm or a leg to place on that dot. Soon, you will find yourself all twisted up in a knot, struggling to keep your balance! If you want to be reminded that you can’t turn your neck all the way to one side, play this with your kid.
Some noises will forever be imprinted into our minds. Alarm clocks blaring, for example, will always make you jump, even when you are already awake. They signal to your body GO, PANIC, GET UP! and it’s usually terrifying. Operation has one of those deep-seated sounds rooted in trauma, too! That BUZZ when you touch the metal edges is enough to awaken childhood memories alone. Now, it’s your time to provide that experience for your kid! Apart from being really fun, this game is perfect for developing hand-eye coordination, and maybe even some patience!
One of the lesser-known games on the list, Qwirkle is as much fun to say as it is to play! This strategy game is based on placing tiles of the same color or shape next to each other and earning points based on certain combinations. It’s really simple to pick up and is sure to provide hours of fun. Since this game does have some strategy to it, you can be sure that you will be helping hone your child’s reasoning and critical thinking skills as they play. It is fun for kids as well as adults, so start playing!
If Tom and Jerry reincarnated into a board game, it would have to be Mouse Trap, right? This classic game is a perfect one to teach the kids and pull out during sleepovers or rainy days. The goal is to move your character (the mouse) around the board and collect as much cheese as possible. Beware! Step on the wrong square, however, and end up caught under the cage and unable to move. This is a fun game to play that teaches some great lessons like cause and effect, construction, and decision making.
We couldn’t put a list of board games together without including Checkers! This simple game has been around for a VERY long time and is the perfect way to pass the time. It can be played with kids, adults, and everyone in between, making this a good pickup for any household with multiple ages present. Moving your pieces around and hopping your competitors is always rewarding and sure to inspire some great memories. If you have a smart and inquisitive child, checkers is often the place you first start to see it!
Clue is such a popular game that they have even made modern movies based on the concept (Knives Out, for example). Using small clues and hidden hints, you slowly begin to uncover the fact that there is murder afoot! Once the chase is on, you want to put all the pieces together to discover who the culprit is and how, exactly, they did the deed. This game is less complicated in its pieces, but it does require some solid sleuthing. This is a good one to pick up for especially gifted kids or if you want to play with a 7-year-old partner. Either way, they are sure to have a blast solving the crime!
We have all gathered around with our friends and shaken a Magic 8 ball, wondering if it would confirm the thing that we already wanted to do. If it confirmed it, it worked! If it didn’t, well, we might as well shake it till it does.
Think of a Ouija board like a Magic 8 ball, ask it a question and have fun finding out the answer, even if it’s just for play. Using the plastic triangle, your kid can ask whatever questions they like (along with you or a friend) and see the hilarious responses come up. You never truly know what’s going to happen, and you never know the answers you might get!
If you want to have some hilarious fun that is sure to get crazy, try the 5 Second Rule Jr. Game! The goal of the game is simple: each card has a question that is read of to a specific person. As soon as the question is read, you have five seconds to answer! As you get certain questions, you find yourself unable to answer (we all know that timed challenges make it IMPOSSIBLE to think straight).
This game is specifically designed for kids you don’t have to worry about any inappropriate questions coming up as you play, either. It doesn’t require a lot, just a few people to laugh and have fun.
